Brookwood Hills is a historic neighborhood located in intown Brookwood North of Midtown and South of Buckhead. Home to about 1000 people, it was founded in the early 1920s by Benjamin Franklin Burdette and his son, Arthur. The site of the neighborhood is located where some of the blodiest battles of the civil war took place. It is also the home of one of the most prestigious summer swim teams in Brookwood, the Brookwood Hills Bullfrogs.
Brookwood Hills is located in the heart of Brookwood, only a few miles away from Downtown. It is connected by three entrances to Peachtree St., and has no other outlet. Brookwood Hills is bordered roughly by Peachtree Street on the West, I-85 on the South, the Norfolk train tracks to the North, and Clear Creek to the East. Because of the recent rapid growth of Metro Brookwood, developers have made constant attempts to build whatever they can near, or inside the neighborhood. Examples of these are:
- Building a MARTA station inside of the neighborhood. (stopped)
- An industrial park on the other side of Clear Creek.
- Extending W. Peachtree into and through the neighborhood. (stopped)
- Highrise apartments in residents' backyards.(mostly stopped)
Because of these pressures of being a big city community, the Brookwood Hills Community Club (BWHCC) was created. (This is the reason so many of the above projects were halted). The BWHCC also owns the park and pool in the center of Brookwood Hills.
History and Development of Brookwood Hills.
Brookwood Hills was the creation of the Burdette family. Benjamin first created the neighborhood on the Battlefield of Peachtree Creek owned by himself and local Thomas Collier. The streets were built in accordance to the hilly landscape, instead of grid form, as was popular at the time. Mr. Burdette planted oak saplings during Brookwood Hill's birth, which now stand tall and are the trademark quality of the neighborhood. The area developed by Benjamin and Arthur Burdette is now registered as the "Brookwood Hills Historic district".
After a wave of burgularies in the 1970s, a man in BWH took action. After he got pulled over by Sgt. Barry Miller, he asked him to patrol the neighborhood for one night to try to catch the infamous robber. Sgt. Miller caught the crook his first day on the job. Sgt. Barry is now as much a part of the neighborhood as anything or anyone else. He is now head of the neighborhood patrol, which now includes four officers who were added because of the increasing crime rate in Brookwood.
